Blue Shield of California Discontinues Active Choice 600 Individual PPO Plan

Effective January 1, 2006, Blue Shield of California will discontinue their Active Choice 600 Individual PPO health insurance plan. This was a very popular plan due to its low price and maternity coverage. Active Choice 600 members can transfer to any other individual Blue Shield health insurance plan.

PacifiCare of California Small Group $1000 Deductible PPO health insurance plans

PacifiCare of California’s major health insurance weakness has been its limited PPO network of doctors and hospitals. The pending merger with United Health will likely improve PacifiCare’s PPO medical insurance network considerably. This article examines an aberration where the PacifiCare Signature Options 35/50-50/1000 health insurance plan has a significantly lower co-insurance maximum than the PacifiCare Signature Options 35/70-50/1000 medical insurance plan – and costs 5 to 6 percent less on a monthly premium basis.

Tax Treatment of Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) in California

California medical insurance that is compatible with Health Savings Accounts (HSA) enables employers, employees, families and individuals to spend less on their health insurance. Increasingly, people are choosing HSA compatible medical insurance plans, yet California – unlike the Federal government – currently does not allow individuals or companies to deduct HSA contributions from California state income taxes. This article describes the current California tax treatment of HSAs, references an excellent article on HSAs and Archer MSAs, and cites SB 173, pending legislation that would allow the tax deductibility of HSA contributions in California.
