"A well-thought-out walk on the wild side is just your style." This is how Anthem Blue Cross California describes the target audience for their new "Calculated Risk-Taker AKA 1500" health insurance plan.

As the lowest deductible plan of the three Tonik medical insurance plans available, the benefits of the Calculated Risk Taker include:

1. Unlimited Doctor Office visits per year at $40 per visit from a Blue Cross of California preferred provider;
2. $10 generic medicine for a 30 day supply;
3. $1,500 calendar year deductible and annual out of pocket maximum - after which the insurance company essentially pays for all medical services;
4. The health insurance plan has a vision benefit of $50 per year for routine eye exams, glasses or contact lenses;
5. Dental benefits for teeth cleaning and filings up to $500 per year after a $25 deductible;
6. REMEMBER NO maternity coverage - select another medical insurance plan if you want to have a baby;
7. The Out of Pocket maximum (OOP) is the same as the $1,500 deductible. As Blue Cross says "stay in the network and the most that you'll pay for your medical bills this year is your deductible amount ($1,500.) So, if you bite it big you won't wipe out your savings."

Tonik health plans are marketed towards young people between 19 and 29. Blue Cross estimates that the average monthly premium for people under age 30 is about $80 per month. Compared to the average cost of one night in the hospital of $7,175, this is very inexpensive - especially for Generation Y people who surf, skate board and snow board - sports where people can end up in the hospital.
