Blue Shield of California Balance Plans

>> return to Articles

For individuals in reasonably good health with a need for family coverage but not maternity benefits, Blue Shield CA offers Balance Plans.

Balance Plans, with three deductible options - $1,000, $1,700 or $2,500 – give individuals access to preventative care, doctor office visits, generic prescription coverage and ER care before meeting the deductible.

Each plan offers unlimited doctor visits at $30 per visit and $10 generic drugs with brand name prescription drugs available at a higher out-of-pocket cost before meeting the $500 brand name deductible.

Covered services include preventive care and routine physical exams along with well baby care and gynecological exam office visits. Many outpatient services are covered including non-emergency procedures, outpatient surgery in a hospital or ambulatory surgery center and x-ray and lab services. This California health insurance plan provides for inpatient hospitalization services, emergency room and ambulance coverage. Other covered services include mental health care, acupuncture and chiropractic visits. Vision and dental care are not offered under these plans.

All services are provided based on plan deductibles and co-pays, if applicable.

With co-pays the same with all three plans, individuals can select the deductible that best suits their budget and as part of one of California's largest PPO provider networks, finding a doctor is easy.

The Blue Shield of California Balance Plans, with three deductible options, offer a sensible balance of comprehensive benefits and relatively low deductibles.
